Rose Ras (2001, St Jean du Sud, Haïti, lives and works in Paris), a former student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, is a young artist thriving through painting and sculpture. After studying applied arts from 2016 to 2018, she discovered in visual arts a deeply resonant means of expression.

Her early works explore landscapes and automobile waste, reflecting a world in transformation. Her practice, positioned at the intersection of painting and sculpture, explores themes of nature, wandering, and deceleration. Her work emerges from an intuitive process where photography, drawing, and sculptural techniques intertwine. Beginning with rapid sketches, Ras instinctively layers colors and textures, allowing each piece to be articulated organically. This evolution results in a synthesis of different materials and methods, including engraving, routing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, tar, spray paint, walnut stain, metal, and rubber.

A material known for its resistance, rubber is redefined through Ras’ hands, shaped from its industrial rigidity into a tactile, expressive medium. Her visual language flows between the familiar and the misterious—landscapes, specifically framed compositions, richly textured paintings, and sculptural elements incorporating unconventional materials such as repurposed tires.

Repurposed bicycle inner tubes are collected from local repair shops crafting an active, almost animate texture. This selection of recycled materials raises a discourse toward sustainability, reuse, and our intrinsic connection to everyday objects.

Among her works, one finds landscape scenes, uniquely framed artworks, textured paintings, and even sculptural installations utilizing unconventional materials like tires. The ceramic tires become sculptural elements that underline the interplay between materiality and spatial context. By transmuting the tire—a quintessential emblem of mobility and velocity—into a ceramic form, Ras aims to give a sense of permanence and fragility, juxtaposing the fluidity of the inner tubes.Materiality and texture are the core of Ras’ work, prompting a dialogue between object and environment. Each composition, meticulously curated, evokes contemplation, inviting the viewer into an enigmatic space where art and nature converge, dissolve, and transform in an ever-evolving exchange. Her varied and rich body of work combines painting and sculpture, addressing themes such as nature, movement, and deceleration.

Each painting emerges from a creative process where photography, drawing, and sculpture converge. Rose quickly sketches her ideas, adding colors intuitively, embarking on a journey into the unknown. The painting gradually takes shape instinctively, incorporating various techniques and mediums, such as printmaking, painting, spray paint, sculpture, ceramics, tar, and more.

Her pieces seem to play with materiality and texture, inviting viewers to reflect on the relationship between the object and its environment. Each image is carefully curated to create a contemplative and sometimes enigmatic atmosphere, where art and nature intersect and transform one another.
