Elizabeth Orr - Calibration

Inauguration: Saturday June 3, 6 - 8 pm

Duration: June 7 - July 22, 2023

There is a fourth wall in theater, the invisible wall between the performer and the audience. The fourth wall exists in opposition to the backstage. While appreciating the 360° quality of objects, Orr’s wall-hanging sculpture proposes directional engagement similar to theater’s fourth wall.

Orr’s sculpture initiates questions around the wall-hanging object, drawing attention to how it hangs. Within this body of work, Orr proposes perceptual shifts in our expectations in viewing around everyday objects and wall paint while creating unofficial formations for color calibration.

Orr’s second solo exhibition with VIN VIN, Calibration, is inspired by the colors of analog SMPTE color bars (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), a television test pattern used as an NTSC video standard for video color calibration. Orr is both leaning against and embracing the idea of video calibration, which implies a standard for displaying color. Orr waxes poetic on the seven colors of the color calibration test pattern (represented in Color Bars #1), presenting unofficial formations for color calibration in her five Color Bars sculptures.

The exhibition is punctuated by opportunities for potential recalibration with Quick Crates - small, haphazardly constructed crates containing “color samples” featured in the Color Bars sculptures. The sculptures in Calibration Orr has designed to be modular, easily assembled, and transportable.
